Error Patterns and Misconceptions in Math. As an educator, it is essential to understand why students might learn misconceptions and incorrect procedures. Educators have to comprehend the thinking of students by collecting evidence relating to concepts understood and skills attained, and then plan instruction that builds on each student’s prior knowledge and understanding. This is highlighted in the Assessment Principle of National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (2000). This assignment has two parts: a paper and an exercise.
Paper
Write a two- to three-page paper (not including the title and reference pages) discussing common misconceptions and error patterns in mathematics. Include the following in the paper:
- A rationale describing why teachers need to understand and recognize error patterns.
- A description of how educators can diagnose these error patterns.
- Examples of the major misconceptions and error patterns found in both elementary and secondary math classes. d. A summary of effective ways to help students undo these misconceptions in order to dissolve their error patterns. This can be in a table or list. If you take this information from one source and create a table, be sure to cite your source correctly in APA style.ExerciseReview the handout, “Misconceptions and Error Patterns.” Analyze the student’s approach to the problems and in one to two pages and diagnose the error pattern and any misconceptions that this student may have. Describe at least three strategies that can be utilized to remediate this error pattern and undo any misconceptions. This part of the final assignment must be one to two pages in length. The entire assignment must be three to five pages in length, not including title or reference pages (two to three pages for the paper and one to two pages for the exercise). You must cite and reference at least five scholarly sources in total (at least three for the paper, and at least two for the exercise) in addition to the text.Your overall assignment must include an introduction and conclusion, both of which will be written to support the reader in understanding the purpose of your paper and your major points and conclusion. In addition, the paper must include at least one example from your own personal or professional experience.Be sure your completed assignment is formatted in APA format as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
