Throughout this course, you have been learning about effective strategies and teaching practices to increase the achievement of students learning algebra in both elementary and secondary educational settings. In order to be an efficient teacher you must know how to effectively design instructional units and lessons to meet the needs of each and every learner and to ensure each and every student masters the standards and objectives of these lessons. For your final project, you will design a two-week instructional unit based upon the Common Core State Standards of Mathematics (CCSSM) (http://www.corestandards.org/the-standards/mathematics), instructional practices for teaching mathematics as outlined by National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) To do this, you will synthesize your own personal and professional experiences, current research, and the knowledge learned throughout this course.
Instructions
Determine the grade level for which you will develop the instructional unit. Then choose the appropriate mathematics standards to focus on from the CCSSM (http://www.corestandards.org/the-standards/mathematics). Ensure your standards focus upon teaching algebra to elementary and/or secondary students.
Develop a two-week written instructional plan to include the following:
- At least one complete daily lesson plan for each day of the unit.
- At least one lesson that utilizes a cooperative learning strategy.
- At least one lesson that incorporates small group instruction.
- Two to three enrichment and two to three intervention activities, with a description of appropriate modifications for students with special needs, and for English language learners.
- All teacher-created materials, worksheets, handouts and other instructional materials needed to implement the unit.
- All assessments and their corresponding rubrics. Include at least one performance-based assessment, one quiz, one unit test and one open-ended assessment. Use at least five different resources about teaching algebra to elementary and secondary students. The resources must include (a) current research on the teaching and learning of algebra for elementary and/or high school students, (b) at least one community resource and (c) at least one researched method for parent involvement. This two-week math unit must be presented in a dynamic and engaging PowerPoint presentation (12 to 15 slides in length). In the speaker notes section, be sure to discuss your reasons for choosing each lesson and/or activity and cite relevant research to support your decisions. Be sure to take into consideration appropriate APA formatting for in-slide references and speaker notes.
